Safety is not a Can, but a Must

Occupational first aid is a legal requirement and must not be left to chance. Art. 36 ArGV 3 requires that the necessary means are always available. For companies where employees face eye hazards from chemicals, dust, chips or radiation, this means specifically: a fully operational eyewash station is not an option, it is an obligation. EKAS Directive 6512 specifies that it must be accessible and fully functional at all times, while GHS/CLP labelling additionally obliges companies to ensure the first aid measures prescribed in safety data sheets are in place. ISO 45001 adds to this by requiring documented risk assessments and demonstrable protective measures.

Why does this matter? A look at reality.

According to SUVA, around 26,700 occupational accidents with eye injuries as the primary diagnosis are recorded in Switzerland every year. That amounts to one eye accident every five minutes on every working day. These injuries happen everywhere: in production, during grinding, milling or welding in metalworking, in laboratories through contact with corrosive liquids - or as trivially as a dust particle in the office.

And when it happens? Everything must be in order.

Whether foreign bodies such as chips, dust or sand (the most common cause of eye injuries in the workplace) or contact with corrosive liquids: the eyes must be rinsed immediately for at least 15 minutes to prevent serious long-term damage. An eyewash bottle that is empty, missing, opened or expired can, in that very moment, be the difference between recovery and permanent harm.
